President Donald Trump stirred even more controversy in the raging debate on birthright citizenship by sharing a letter posted by conservative radio host Michael Savage on Truth Social on Wednesday. This was the same day that he appeared before the US Supreme Court for arguments on the legality of the executive order that he had signed to scrap birthright citizenship.
In the letter, India and China were mentioned as “hellholes,” while their immigrants were called “gangsters with laptops.”
Trump Backs Savage’s Racist Tirade
In the letter of Michael Savage, he directed his strong condemnation at a Chinese-American ACLU attorney who was in defence of birthright citizenship before the court. He wrote that children born on US soil to foreign parents instantly become citizens and proceed to bring their entire families from countries like China, India, or, as he stated, “some other hellhole on the planet.” He further argued that Asian immigrants, unlike Europeans, had failed to adapt to American culture.
DJ Trump reposted this letter without any comments or opinions, a deliberate attempt in the eyes of observers, making an explicit endorsement of its content.
Trump’s Anti-India Post Backlash, fueling Immigration Debate
These comments elicited a tremendous reaction from Indians and the Indian diaspora in the US, who found the comments to be highly xenophobic. This reaction highlighted the substantial contributions of people of Indian origin to the economy and professional fields, especially those of technology, health care, and finance. The Indian community in America is known to be among the most educated groups of immigrants in the country.
The context around the post is important. In the April 1 session at the Supreme Court, the Court seemed unprepared to support the executive order issued by President Trump. When the chief justice, John Roberts, was responding to the idea put forth by the administration that we live in a “new world,” he flatly remarked that “it’s the same Constitution.” Both Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch asked some very sharp questions related to the 14th Amendment.
Trump Doubles Down on Birthright Citizenship
In response to the hearings, Donald Trump continued to be adamant in his rejection of the policy, becoming the first US president in office to take such a strong stance. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the US is “the only Country in the World STUPID enough” to have this policy.
Analysts predict that the United States Supreme Court will make its ruling by June, with a negative ruling likely to prove to be a major blow to Donald Trump’s attempt at a radical immigration reform.
The republication of Michael Savage’s comments shows the extent to which the debate over the issue has been polarised, with clear indications that the administration is intent on keeping it front and center in politics, whatever the outcome of the hearing.
