A fresh political flashpoint erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress after party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial “terrorist” remark directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi triggered sharp reactions from the ruling party, intensifying the already charged electoral discourse.
The controversy started as Kharge, while addressing the masses, made a comment that was taken very seriously by BJP leaders and was perceived by them as their Prime Minister being called a “terrorist.” This comment led to a huge controversy with top BJP leaders lambasting Kharge and even filing a case against him with the Election Commission for violating the Model Code of Conduct.
Leading the charge against the statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said it was a “highly condemnable” statement and that PM Modi had “completely subdued terrorism over the last 12 years”. In addition to this, he went on to say that the Congress party keeps on reducing the standard of political dialogue and even disrespects the democratic will of the citizens.
Speaking similarly on this topic were other BJP leaders like Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who called the statement “atrocious.”
In addition to this, the BJP also asked for an apology from Kharge, demanding that the Election Commission take legal action against Kharge because the latter’s statement was one of the “gravest possible imputations in public life”.
Under increasing pressure, Kharge came out with a clarification and said that he did not personally call the Prime Minister a terrorist. Instead, he defended himself by claiming that his words had been misunderstood, and said that Modi often spoke in threatening terms during his election speeches.
This controversy has made the political rivalry between the two parties even more intense, with both of them making allegations against each other in an environment of tough elections.
The story highlights the growing hostility in India’s political environment, where campaign narratives are still dominated by rhetoric about national security and leadership.
