How BJP Breached Fortress?
The BJP is set to form an Independent government in West Bengal, by sweeping 206 seats out of 294 members assembly. Trinamool Congress managed to bag only 80 seats as of the results declared by EC on Monday.
Indian National Congress and Aam Janata Unnayan have each won two seats in the polls, whereas Communist Party of India (Marxist) and All India Secular Front have each won one seat.
The verdict in Bengal was due to both the campaign strategy adopted by BJP and the anti-incumbency sentiment prevailing in the state, a report by Hindustan Times.
BJP managed to dispel the ‘Bohiragoto’ (outsider) tag given by the rival TMC and succeeded in instilling fear about illegal immigrants among the voters.
The BJP has run a very localized campaign with the use of slogans like “Joy Ma Kali” and “Joy Ma Durga.”
These have worked well for the party, as evidenced by the fact that the party will finally come to power in the state, which is the native place of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of Jana Sangh.
This point was highlighted even by PM Modi in his speech at the BJP’s Delhi office.
Who will be Bengal’s CM?
Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign as CM, calling her defeat a “conspiracy”, which would not prevent Bengal from having its first BJP leader as new Chief Minister.
A CM can only hold office as long as they enjoy the confidence of the Assembly states Article 164 of the Constitution of India.
Since Mamata’s TMC had lost the majority, her government became unconstitutional. Though she is looking forward to challenging the results, the BJP has shifted its focus to constituting a new Chief Minister for West Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of opposition in West Bengal assembly, who defeated Banerjee on her home turf of Bhabanipur, has emerged as the frontrunner for the post. However, other party leaders said BJP has not ruled out names of state unit chief Samik Bhattacharya and vice-president Agnimitra Paul as potential CM faces.
