Suvendu Adhikari’s Personal Assistant shot dead in Bengal amid post poll violence

On Wednesday night, Chandranath Rath, PA of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead by unidentified goons.

West Bengal BJP leader’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, was shot dead on Wednesday night while on his way home, said police. He succumbed to 3 bullet injuries, one in his head.

He was approached by unidentified goons at Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas, area since gripped with tensions; at a time where there have been already reports of post poll violence in the state where BJP swept Mamata Banerjee’s 15 year reign putting an end to it.

“Chandranath Rath has been shot dead. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. Investigation is going on,” said a senior police officer of Barasat police district.

Chandra Nath Dutt was a long-term associate of Adhikari, who defeated outgoing CM Mamata by over 15,000 votes in her political citadel, Bhabanipur.

As per the authorities, another person who was along with Rath in the vehicle also got injured and was rushed to the hospital.

The above incident occurred just two days after the BJP won the West Bengal assembly elections, securing 207 seats. In the same assembly, TMC won only 80 seats.

Additionally, Adhikari also defeated TMC leader Mamata Banerjee at the Bhabanipur constituency, the assembly constituency that belongs to the outgoing chief minister.

It is pertinent to note here that top BJP leaders – PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony on the 9th of May in Kolkata.

Police and BJP senior leaders were rushing to the site.

Rath was instrumental in Adhikari’s election campaign in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies. Adhikari won both constituencies.

“Unidentified motorcycle-borne goons were following the car, as far as we have come to know. His vehicle was stopped near Doharia in Madhyamgram, and the miscreants fired indiscriminately while Rath was still in the vehicle,” Koustav Bagchi, BJP leader, told the media.
