Raghav Chadha Leaves AAP, Joins hands with BJP, Triggering Major Political Realignment

A significant political row –  Raghav Chadha has formally aligned himself with the BJP, which represents a clear exit from his erstwhile affiliation with Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party, thereby creating a wave in India’s political environment. Being a prominent figure of AAP, Chadha’s decision reflects the crisis facing the party internally.

Raghav Chadha has recently been removed from the position of Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha, signalling the cause for his collaboration with BJP.

Understand the Reason Behind Leaving Aam Aadmi Party

Raghav Chadha stated the reason as ideological disbelief with AAP working pattern.

Staking out his position as a leader dedicated to governing more than fighting, he argued that he realized he was in the “wrong party.” However, this comes after several months of reports of friction within the party and his ousting from important roles in Parliament.

Rajya Sabha Numbers and Anti-Defection Angle

Chadha, being an MP of Rajya Sabha, plays a significant role in its departure from AAP, and such defections seem to have serious parliamentary consequences. This could affect the distribution of political power in the Upper House, as some parties to gain and lose.

In such switching of parties situations, it raises the question about the applicability of the 10th Schedule of the Constitution, which guards the politicians from disqualification who defect in groups of 2/3rd.

Key numbers and aspects:

  • AAP currently holds 10 Rajya Sabha MPs
  • At least 7 MPs (two-thirds) are required to legally avoid disqualification
  • A shift of 7 MPs would reduce AAP’s strength to just 3 in the Upper House
  • The Rajya Sabha has a total strength of 245 members, making even small shifts significant
  • BJP’s tally could see a notable boost, strengthening its legislative position
  • The move impacts voting outcomes on key bills, especially where margins are tight

Who is Benefited? Kejriwal’s AAP or Modi’s govt. BJP?

The leaving of Chadha is viewed as a huge blow for AAP, especially considering the fact that at a point when AAP is trying to build its national profile, the party is losing an important member. Weakened presence in the Rajya Sabha and the BJP gaining numbers are other negative aspects related to the scenario.

AAP officials view it as another tactic aimed at making their situation worse, but on the contrary, Chadha has presented his action as something that was done under careful consideration of the entire political future. No matter what views are prevalent today, the process described above can be called an important turning point in India’s party system.
