Early morning fire in east Delhi’s residential building trapped families, killing 9, including a toddler, which shocked everyone.
A tragic incident occurred at Delhi’s Vivek Vihar residency on Sunday early morning. Fire broke out at a four-storey building, killing 9 people, among which was a toddler, and injuring several others. The officials suspected an AC malfunction and electrical fault as possible reasons that led to this mishap.
The fire proliferated quickly across the upper floors of the storey, trapping families in their homes, leaving no way out.
Fire spread across several flats
The sudden flare-up was seen early morning between 3.30 AM and 3:45 AM, as per residents. The first emergency call was made to Delhi Fire Service at 3.47 AM, followed by a PCR alert at 3.48 AM, leading to an immediate response.
Fire brigades reached the location within minutes, but till then the fire spread across entirely covering the majority flats of the storey.
The Deputy Commissioner of police, Rajendra Prasad Meena, said that the blaze started with one flat and quickly spread across to at least six units covering the second, third, and fourth floors.
“Fire extinguishing operations rescued 10-15 persons from the building,” he added.
A delivery agent who arrived late at night was the first one to notice it. He stated, “saw sparks coming out from the external AC outlet”.
And by the time he could understand the depth of the situation, the incident had already escalated.
Rescue Efforts and Police Response
More than 12-14 fire tenders were deployed at the situation, and a large rescue operation was carried out through balconies, rescuing 15-20 people using ladders.
A key factor in the high death toll was that many flats had grilled windows and locked exits, making the escape routes difficult for residents as well as for firefighters rescuing them.
Several injured residents were shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and immediately underwent the necessary treatment.
An investigation has begun by authorities to understand whether safety lapses or negligence could be the cause of the tragic fire incident.
9 Dead, Including a Toddler
Officials confirmed 9 dead, with many people from the same extended family.
The victims included:
First floor: A woman (in her 40s) and others.
Second floor: A family of five with 3 adults(50-60 age, a young couple (30’s) and a toddler (1.5 years age)
Third floor: A family of three, two adults (50-60 years old) and a young man (in his 30s).
These victims were found on different floors of the storey, with 5 bodies from the third, 3 bodies from the second, and 1 woman’s body along with others near the staircase on the first floor.
Victims were found in severely charred condition, officials stating that DNA testing may be required for identification.
Cause Under Investigation
Preliminary reports suggest that flames may have been caught by an AC blast or electrical short circuit. Residents reporting a ‘loud sound’ had been heard shortly before the fire broke out.
The exact cause can only be rectified after a detailed forensic examination, officials stated.
Inspection of electrical systems and appliances by the forensic team may bring out the actual truth of the incident.

The horrific incident has once again raised alarms about the safety rules in residential buildings in densely populated areas.
Repeated dangers such as malfunctioning of electricity connections, lack of fire escape passages, and the existence of sealed buildings having grilled windows contribute to such accidents becoming deadly.
Considering the nine people who lost their lives in the fire at Vivek Vihar, wherein an entire family was lost along with a child, it is clear that there should be strict adherence to fire safety norms.
