Counting Begins, BJP Leads Early

Under the strict guidance of the Election Commission, vote counting began at 8.00 AM, starting with postal ballots and then followed by EVM counting.

Determining the high-stakes nature of political contests, May 2 recorded a high turnout of voters around 92.47% despite re-polling in 15 booths.

As of 8.30 AM, polls showed Bharatiya Janata Party leading in around 30 seats, while AITMC trailed at around 18 seats, indicating BJP has an advantage.

In a video message released amid the counting day, Monday mid-afternoon, the TMC supremo was seen requesting voters not to leave the centre, “wait till sunset,” reflecting confidence that the trends would reverse, giving an edge to TMC votes against BJP in further counting.

Midday Surge Turns Into Triumph

In the early afternoon, what began as a steady lead for BJP transformed into a decisive wave for the saffron party.

Around 3.45 PM, the polls showed the party leading with 193 seats, leaving behind the majority mark of 148 in the 294-member assembly.

This phase marked a historic political churn in the election, where Trinamool Congress’s comeback seemed impossible, as Bharatiya Janata Party swept Mamata’s hope of a fourth consecutive term.

In the midst of these events, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hurried to the counting center in Bhabanipur, revealing growing apprehension among the TMC ranks as trends turned decisively against them.

By the evening, the leads had converted into a confirmed historic win. The BJP surpassed the 200-seat mark, achieving 206 seats, while TMC managed to bag 81 seats.

This triumph of anti-incumbency not only ensured Bharatiya Janata Party’s first-ever government but also brought an end to TMC’s 15-year reign, making it one of the most decisive elections in the state’s history.

Modi Speech and BJP Reaction

Last on November 14, after the BJP-led coalition won in Bihar, PM Narendra Modi had pointed out West Bengal from the party headquarters, stating, “The Ganga flows from Bihar and goes all the way to Ganga Sagar”.

The next year, he was back at the same podium, this time with a landslide victory as a supporting factor, addressing party workers on Monday by saying, “With the victory in Bengal, the lotus is blooming all the way from Gangotri to Ganga Sagar.”

In his vote of thanks, PM Narendra Modi lauded people for trusting BJP and helping in achieving a historic mandate in West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry.

He also said at the victory celebration event, where PM Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, BJP president Nitin Nabin, along with others, stated, “When BJP has won in Bengal, there should be talk of ‘badlav (change)’ not ‘badla (revenge)’; ‘bhavishya (future)’ not ‘bhay (fear)’ “.

“Banglay poriborton hoye geche” (Changes have taken place in Bengal)”, PM Modi told the gathering in Bengali.

How BJP win West Bengal in 2026?

BJP’s win owed to its well-thought-out approach:

  • Anti-incumbency: With 15 years of rule by All India Trinamool Congress, problems related to unemployment, corruption, and governance were unfavorable for the ruling party.
  • Suvendu Adhikari: An open challenge in Bhabanipur was given to Mamata Banerjee, forcing her to stay focused on her own seat.
  • Narrative dominance: BJP overcame the “outsider” perception and associated itself with the Bengali culture.
  • Safety and women voters: It made the issue of security of women prominent by raising the issue of rape at RG Kar Medical College and also by contesting from Panihati, where the victim’s mother contested.
  • Better organization: An organized booth-wise system helped BJP in mobilizing voters.

These factors turned early leads into a decisive mandate for the BJP.
