Vijay ‘Thalapathy’ scripted TVK’s landslide Victory in Tamil Nadu’s Election 2026; fall of DMK- AIADMK dominance

Actor turned Politician – Vijay reshapes Tamil Nadu politics with a historic mandate. From a debut party to becoming a ruling force, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam bagged 100+ seats.

Thalapathy, an actor turned politician, marked a major political shift in Tamil Nadu’s 2026 assembly election. Vijay, leading Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), gave a breakthrough performance, challenging the longest ruling party’s dominance – DMK and AIADMK.

On February 2, 2024, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar launched TVK with an official identity secured on Sept 8. The party was built on modern Dravidian principles, signalling his entry into politics with a clear aim at disrupting the state’s traditional power structure.

Positioning the contest as a “democratic battle,” Vijay rejected alliances and took on both the DMK and BJP directly. Inspired by M.G. Ramachandran’s rise, he chose to lead independently—turning his debut into a defining political moment.

The results show clearly a desire for change, as a new political player enters the scene, which has been monopolized by the incumbent players for many years. However, the mandate does not give total power to any one political player, implying that the electorate desires both stability and change at once.

This is another way of ensuring that traditional political parties stay relevant while promoting smaller political parties to positions of significance. In a situation where there is no clear winner, the way power is attained lies in the alliances formed.

Who was in power and how did it change?

Tamil Nadu was governed by DMK under Chief Minister M.K Stalin until this election. The state has always witnessed alternation of ruling power between the DMK and AIADMK parties. The same outcome was expected; the trend will continue, with both DMK and AIADMK remaining in central power.

However, Vijay’s TVK disrupted this trend. A party formed in 2024, entered the assembly election 2026 as a debutant but transformed into the leading force, overtaking the numbers from both established parties in the result.

This paradigm shift is not just about the victory, but the scale at which the traditional rule parties were defeated by breaking a decades-old two-party dominance in a single election.

Thalapthy’s Strategy

As per Hindustan Times report, Vijay deliberately chose to skip the Lok Sabha elections after launching TVK in 2024, instead focusing on building ground support and preparing for a strong base assembly debut, which worked in his favor.

His campaign leaned heavily on welfare promises and governance-focused commitments, which “clicked with Tamil Nadu’s voters,” according to trends observed during counting.

In the counting process, TVK had taken the lead position in more than 105 seats, which was a clear indication of how early it could win.

The appeal of Vijay to voters and grassroots mobilization ensured that its popularity could be converted into potential votes and help it transcend from merely being a one-person party.

How does Tamil Nadu’s politics affect?

Victory for Vijay is not merely an electoral success but rather a structural change in the political system of Tamil Nadu. As his party has managed to achieve a major mark of 108 seats, TVK will form the government in a majority.

The election result marks the end of the old political dichotomy between DMK and AIADMK and the emergence of a new political force that has been able to secure statewide support right from its maiden elections.

With Vijay set to assume power, Tamil Nadu moves into a new political era, where the mandate rests on welfare assurances, well-laid groundwork, and a voter swing.
