The Chennai Super Kings gave an overall performance on Thursday and defeated the Mumbai Indians by 103 runs in their game of IPL 2026.
Match Overview
In their IPL 2026 match at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 103 runs due to an all-around performance. In terms of runs, this ended up being MI’s largest loss in IPL history. After being asked to bat first, Sanju Samson produced an undefeated century as CSK amassed 207 for 6.
Samson’s strong innings (101 not out off 54 balls) guaranteed a large total even though the team continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. MI suffered their greatest run loss when they were bowled out for 104 in 19 overs while chasing the target.
According to MI captain Hardik Pandya, the team lost out badly due to their poor opening in the Powerplay. Mumbai were sent back to 11 for 3 in 2.3 overs. Danish Malewar got out for a first-ball duck, Naman Dhir scored a three-ball duck, while Quinton de Kock could make only seven runs.
Even though Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav held on with a 73-run partnership, CSK seized complete control of the match when the partnership was broken.
“I think that in the power play, losing that early wicket is always going to be tricky. You are always chasing the game and we could not cope after that,” said Hardik Pandya.
Samson went crazy against the MI bowlers in the first innings, hitting his second century of the year. There were six maximums and eleven fours in the innings.
Hardik Pandya Admits Batting Failure
Asked whether the track was different during their second batting inning, Hardik Pandya had no other answer other than admitting the fact that it was still the same track. “No, definitely I wouldn’t want to say that. Definitely, they batted very well, they posted 207, it’s the same soil. It was the same track. We should have just batted better.”
The question about whether there was any change in the pitch in the second innings was posed to Hardik, and here was his sincere response, “I would not say that. I’m not someone who would like to say that. They batted well, they scored 207. It was the same track, it was the same soil. We should have just batted well.”
Bowlers Shine: Akeel Hosein’s Spell Seals MI’s Defeat
While Allah Ghazanfar emerged as the most effective bowler of Mumbai Indians in the match with figures of 2/25, it was the performance of CSK spinner Akeel Hosein who bagged a four-wicket haul (4/17) that stood out.
“It was also about the performances of our spinners. But then again, I think they bowled well. And I think what happened is Sanju played really well. At the same time, they had a lot of batters coming at them, chipping in, and putting up a decent scorecard for them. It’s more than a decent scorecard. To chase down that target, it was very important that we get off to a good power play and that momentum should be with us, which we couldn’t do,” explained Hardik.
