IPL 2026 Playoffs: Why Bengaluru and New Chandigarh Are Leading the Race

Bengaluru and New Chandigarh, two cities in India, are competing to host playoff games for this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). Sources say that these are the leading candidates for the IPL’s postseason, which includes the playoffs and finals of the IPL.

The IPL has not officially made a decision yet, but logistics, history, and sports play a role in the board of directors’ final decision. Once finalized, this move will excite fans in both areas and will showcase stadiums closely linked to the tournament’s latest finalists.

Home Grounds of Last Season’s Finalists

A reason why these two grounds are being considered is related to their association with last season’s top IPL teams.

The last season’s champion was Royal Challengers Bengaluru; the runner-up team was Punjab Kings. Both played in the IPL 2025 final, so they are strong candidates for hosting playoff matches in the 2026 season.

Over the years of the IPL, many of the games played in playoffs have been at the home ground of that season’s champion; this is a tradition of having a home game for the playoffs. Therefore, if the playoffs are played at these teams’ home ground, it can help to enhance the experience of the event by increasing participation from fans and boosting atmosphere.

Chinnaswamy Stadium’s Strong Credentials

There will be many IPL 2026 league games at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, as it is one of the most popular cricket stadiums in India and also an excellent venue for some of the biggest sporting events in India. It has very good facilities for TV broadcast, event management with experienced teams, and an active crowd that regularly fills the stands of the stadium.

Also, in addition to the necessary approval by the Government of Karnataka to host IPL games this season, this indicates that Bengaluru is very likely to host the IPL playoff games.

New Chandigarh’s Growing Cricket Infrastructure

At the same time, New Chandigarh has turned out to be an excellent host city for large cricket events, too. The city has been able to accommodate the Punjab Kings’ matches during IPL 2026 by providing good-quality stadium infrastructure for player comfort and ease in managing large crowds to effectively execute the tournament’s safety plan.

The Punjab Kings are scheduled to play four home games in New Chandigarh and then play the remainder of their home games in Dharamshala for the 2026 IPL season.

The venue has proven it is capable of hosting playoff games in the past with good facilities and hosting experience.

Logistical Planning Plays a Major Role

Before finalizing the venues for the IPL, the governing body is weighing several considerations. Those considerations include (a) convenience of travel to/from the venue for teams, (b) requirements for broadcast infrastructure, (c) security arrangements, (d) scheduling during the latter stages of the tournament, and (e) the stadium capacity and fan engagement.

Bengaluru and New Chandigarh have most of these factors fulfilled. They have good cricket infrastructure and have hosted major events, making them stronger than all of the other venues being considered.

Early Season Performance Adds Interest

Even though IPL 2026 has yet to be completed and is still in the beginning phases, both areas have successfully hosted home games in their respective cities. As of today, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has played 2 times at home and will play an additional 5 times (a total of 7 games) during the league portion of their schedule before moving the remainder of their games to Raipur. Similarly, Punjab Kings have hosted two home games thus far and will play the remainder of their league schedule there before moving the rest of their games to Dharamshala. All of these games will allow the organizers to assess things like crowd management, logistics, and how matches are run before establishing the final playoff locations.
