A Voice That Defined Indian Cinema

Asha Bhosle’s career spanned over 8 decades with thousands of recordings across many different Indian and international languages.

She could emotively switch from romantic ballads to classical pieces and dance tracks, making her the most versatile playback singer for Indian films.

Her influence extends beyond just Indian artists; for example, the British rock band Cornershop released an album in 1997 named “Brimful of Asha”, uniting Western and Eastern cultures.

Musicians and composers alike have noted her versatility as one of the main reasons for her success.

Oscar winner A.R. Rahman stated, “Her voice and presence will always be remembered.”

Shreya Ghoshal says that when she was growing up, Asha was her greatest inspiration and teacher in music.

Farhan Akhtar is quoted as saying, “When you mention playback singing, you must mention Asha Bhosle.”

From Humble Beginnings to Global Fame

At an early age and nearly simultaneously with Lata, Asha lost her father when she was three. As a result of the family situations, Asha began to sing with her sister. Sometimes she sang for just Lata to hear; other times she sang at local events.

When Asha was sixteen years old, she married, but when that marriage ended, she was determined to pursue her music career.

Asha has had to constantly prove and establish herself as her own individual artist, despite ongoing comparisons with Lata.

Asha and O. P. Nayyar worked together throughout the 1950s, but their working relationship ended after that decade, at which point she and R. D. Burman were working together. Eventually, they were married and continued working together on many of Bollywood’s greatest songs.

A Life Beyond Music

Bhosle spent many years in music and continued to innovate and diversify throughout her life, most recently teaming up with the British virtual band Gorillaz for their 2026 release. The Mountain is an album thematically based on death and loss.

In addition to music, Bhosle was an avid cook and a successful entrepreneur with her own chain of restaurants called Asha’s with locations in many international cities, including London and Dubai.

Bhosle was much loved as a person, as well as an extraordinary artist, and her songs were enjoyed by millions of people from different generations around the world.

Millions around the world will remember Asha Bhosle for her beautiful voice and her ability to unite people through music long after she is gone.
