Police detained Uday Bhanu Chib following a protest linked to an event at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, according to reports. The incident has triggered political reactions from both ruling and opposition parties.

Who Is Uday Bhanu Chib?
Uday Bhanu Chib is a youth leader associated with the Indian National Congress and its youth wing. Publicly available information about his early background remains limited. He began his political journey with the National Students’ Union of India, the Congress party’s student organisation. He later rose through the ranks of the student wing and became active in national-level youth politics.
He went on to take on a leadership role within the Indian Youth Congress. He has since been involved in youth mobilisation efforts and political outreach.

The Protest at Bharat Mandapam
The event held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi has drawn attention following the protest. Reports suggest some participants managed to enter the venue before staging their protest. Around lunchtime (approximately 12:30 p.m.), participants raised slogans and displayed political messaging during the brief protest. The incident was subsequently reported by several media outlets.
Some participants were reportedly detained, though the exact number and identities have not been fully confirmed.
Authorities diverted significant resources to pursuing and apprehending YC Member Harjit Singh Chib, as they believed they would find sufficient evidence to justify charges against him related to his involvement with the YC protest at Bharat Mandapam. According to reports, Singh was questioned by police members at the Tilak Marg police station prior to being arrested; however, police claim that Singh was not cooperating fully with the investigation and would provide false information when questioned. At approximately 10:00 a.m. Singh was presented in front of a magistrate with an application for custodial remand for further investigation.
Political Reactions
There’s been an escalation in political discussion over this protest, with the BJP criticising the protest and Congress leaders defending it on the basis of its being peaceful and its aim to highlight concerns regarding governing bodies. This incident raises further questions regarding security measures for high profile international events (such as the AI summit), as there were delegates from around the world attending along with many major leaders within the space. There hasn’t been any public comment from the organisers regarding how the protesters gained access and performed their action at the venue.
For now, only through the legal process will consequences be known for Chib as it pertains to this event. More broadly, both youth political activity and public protest continue to influence India’s national dialogue – this example demonstrates both phenomena.
