A tragic accident in Ahmedabad has left a family devastated after two confirmed deaths within this family (the children), while both parents are hospitalized with presumed food poisoning.
The accident occurred because the family consumed dosa made from fermented dosa batter purchased from a local dairy market that has not been known as a reliable source for food quality materials. An agency is currently investigating the circumstances to gather sufficient evidence to establish the cause of death. The majority of the evidence needed to establish the cause(s) of death for both children will likely be provided via the postmortem.
What Happened That Night
Family members reported that Vimal Prajapati’s problems began after he bought batter for dosai from a local dairy store so he could make dinner at home, like he had done many times before (at Ghanashyam Dairy).
However, it became apparent the next morning that everyone in his family (Vimal, his wife Bhavna and his two children) felt very sick with nausea, vomited, and had abdominal pain, so they were taken to the hospital because they were becoming ill very quickly.
The doctors believed they were suffering from food poisoning but did not know what the source of the problem was immediately.
Two Young Lives Lost
The children’s conditions worsened despite receiving medical attention. On April 3, the family lost their three-month-old daughter in the hospital. Two days later, their four-year-old daughter also died due to her inability to recover. The family and the community are devastated by these losses. Vimal Prajapati and his wife, Bhavna, remain in critical condition in the hospital while their healthcare team is attempting to treat them, as well as assisting law enforcement to gather information on how the events occurred.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Local government agencies began investigating the case shortly after the incident occurred.
The police were given a complaint by relatives, and information was being collected on what the family ate prior to becoming ill.
Staff from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation took samples of the dosa batter from the dairy store in question. These samples have been sent to the Food Safety Laboratory for analysis.
According to a senior police official, the cause of death for the two deceased can only be determined once the postmortem report and results of the food lab tests are determined. At that point, it will be known if the dosa batter was contaminated or if another factor contributed to their illness.
Dairy Shop Owner Responds
The owner of the dairy shop, Ghanashyam Shah, has denied that the batter sold at his shop caused the incident. According to him, the shop sells large quantities of batter every day, and no other customer has reported any problems.
He said that on the day the family purchased the batter, around 100 kilograms of khiru were sold to customers. After hearing about the tragedy, Shah reportedly contacted several customers who bought batter that day to check if they experienced any health issues. He claims no one else reported falling sick.
Key Detail Raises More Questions
Another important detail has emerged during the investigation. Officials said that the family had purchased around three kilograms of dosa batter, but only about 300 grams were actually used to prepare the meal.
This has raised additional questions for investigators about whether contamination could have occurred elsewhere, either during preparation or storage. Experts say food poisoning cases can sometimes occur due to improper storage, bacterial growth, or contamination during cooking. However, authorities have not confirmed any such findings yet.
