During a rally in Tiruvalla, Kerala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a firm political assault on both Congress and the Left, claiming they have been spreading a consistent amount of lies throughout their time in power.
He made the comment while speaking to a packed crowd that included members of both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) who have become “experts at lying” according to Modi, noting that each party routinely attempts to label as false any fact or narrative that they do not agree with.
“They claim that (the Kerala Story) was a lie; they claim that (the Kashmir Files) was a lie; they claim that (the Dorandhar Story) was a lie,” said Modi, speaking about the number of contentious films that have created much debate within politics.
Debate Over Films and Narratives
Prime Minister Modi’s comments were about films such as The Kerala Story and The Kashmir Files – which have caused great controversy through political parties since they have different views of the same subject matter. According to Modi, when the opposition makes negative comments about these two films, it shows an overall pattern of rejecting any type of narrative that does not match what their party believes.
By mentioning Dhurandhar in his comments, he has expanded the scope of these comments to newer forms of cultural and cinematic debate.
Modi further stated that rather than working together to create a positive result and provide constructive feedback, the opposition tries to discredit the material outright, regardless of what they really think.
Allegations Around Policy Misinformation
In addition to movies, Modi accused the Congress and the Left of spreading confusion and fear about key government policies.
Specifically, he addressed the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), stating that opposition leaders have cast them in a false light to spread panic amongst the people.
To illustrate his point, Modi pointed to Goa — where the Uniform Civil Code has been in use for many years — and asked why the negative portrayal of these laws is not applicable to Goa and why this law has not been implemented throughout India.
“They are in the business of creating falsehoods,” he said, implying that opposition parties are intentionally misrepresenting the facts to gain political advantage.
Concerns Over Indian Migrants in Gulf
The Prime Minister also targeted Kerala’s two dominant political alliances—the LDF and UDF—calling them “two sides of the same coin”.
He claimed that despite their public rivalry, both alliances share a “secret partnership” and work together when it comes to opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Modi compared their political clashes to staged performances, suggesting that their differences are exaggerated for public perception while their underlying interests align.
Government Response and Reassurance
Modi has assured that India will do everything within its power to help its citizens living abroad as tensions continue to escalate in West Asia. He has been in touch with many of the leaders of the various Gulf nations and has already rescued many Indians from conflict-troubled regions. “We are doing our very best to rescue all of our people who are still in the conflict countries.” In addition, he assured the families of those in conflict countries that they are not alone and that the Indian government will be by their sides the entire way.
LDF and UDF ‘Two Sides of the Same Coin’
Two major parties in India’s political landscape, the LDF and the UDF, have long been depicted as being at odds with one another, yet they continue to work together through what has been credited as a “secret collaboration” in their opposition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Prime Minister Modi compared their conflicts as being akin to theatrical performances that have been staged to make it seem like they have a great deal of difference, while in actuality they have many common interests that unite them.
Sabarimala and Corruption Allegations
Modi also expressed concern over what he described as mismanagement issues along with alleged corruption regarding the Sabarimala Temple. He alleged that both LDF and UDF collaborated in the matter of lost temple gold and stated that the temple has become a target of theft. The PM went on to state that if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) assumes power in Kerala, then Mr Koran will prosecute all of those individuals who are connected with those illegal activities.
A Broader Political Message
The speech given by Modi mixed together different aspects of culture, politics and national security to create a larger view about opposition parties. Modi used examples such as film, public policy, international relations, religion, etc. to illustrate how Congress and left-wing politicians are unreliable and motivated by the political process.
However, he did make it very clear that his government’s priorities lie with governance and protecting Indian citizens abroad (i.e. national security).
