The situation in the Middle East has recently become more serious, with a telephone call made from Modi to Pezeshkian regarding the situation in West Asia.
The international community is concerned that the war between Iran, Israel, and the United States could potentially have serious consequences on the rest of the Middle East and on the world oil market.
On X, Modi reiterated that India would continue to work for peace and order in the area and expressed his sorrow over the deaths of civilians.
Modi Expresses Concern Over Civilian Casualties
In a conversation we had, Prime Minister Modi spoke of how wars are creating a humanitarian crisis separate from the deaths caused by armed conflict. The number of civilian deaths and destruction of buildings continues to rise each day, and damage is being caused throughout the region. Listening to the ongoing violence, Modi said, “I had an opportunity to speak with my Iranian counterpart, Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, to share my concerns on the extraordinary human cost of the conflict in this part of the world.” He believes that the people of India are also very disturbed by the development of tension in the region. Additionally, he expressed that “the only way we will stop this conflict from becoming worse is if all partners take action or show restraint,” and he believes that “the only way we will stop this conflict from becoming worse is through diplomatic efforts before it gets any worse.”
Safety of Indians Abroad a Top Priority
The call also discussed a significant matter: the safety of Indian nationals residing and/or working in this area. Millions of Indian expatriates live in West Asia; therefore, their security is always a top concern to New Delhi when tensions within the region rise. Modi stated protection of Indian nationals is one of the government’s greatest priorities. He further emphasised the criticality of uninterrupted transportation routes for both the flow of goods as well as energy supplies. These transportation routes are critical for Indian business; at this time, India relies heavily on energy sourced from the Middle East.
India Calls for Dialogue and Diplomacy
Traditionally, India has maintained balanced relationships with various countries across the region — including Iran, Israel and multiple Gulf states.
In his phone call, Modi expressed that dialogue and diplomacy provide the only effective means of resolving such disputes in a lasting way.
He urged all parties to seek a negotiated resolution, rather than a continuing escalation.
This position is consistent with India’s past foreign policy of supporting stability through multilateral cooperation in conflicts around the world.
Energy Security Concerns Grow
The Prime Minister expressed concern over the rapidly expanding fuss. Late today Modi opened the speech at the New Delhi NXT Summit 2026 with the comment that the energy crisis could disrupt the international energy market and could affect supply chain logistics.
Modi explained during his keynote address that steps are currently being taken by the Indian government to protect its energy security and further noted that in the last few years the strategic petroleum reserve has been greatly improved.

A Delicate Diplomatic Balance
India is offering to assist Iran diplomatically due to India’s careful balancing of its relationships/partnerships with the various powers in the region.
India has built very strong relationships and partnerships with Iran, the US, and Israel over the past many decades.
The careful diplomatic balancing act of India makes its position very significant for all the major global powers who are attempting to find ways to stop the conflict in the region.
