Catastrophic Flooding Sweeps Guizhou Province
Severe flooding has impacted the Guizhou province of China, which now has over 80,000 displaced persons as a result of the strongest flooding in decades. This was triggered by extreme torrential downpours in downstream river basins, which immensely affect Rongjiang and Congjiang counties. Additionally, the rainfall also triggered widespread infrastructure decomposition. Due to the state media labeling them as exceptionally large floods, it doomed multiple families to homelessness overnight with no emergency services.
Human Toll and Dramatic Rescues
The flooding incident has claimed a total of six casualties based on the county’s flood defense system. Numerous inhabitants became marooned in their residences as the water rose quickly, with some waiting to be rescued on the upper levels. Emergency services utilized boats and even drones to provide essential supplies such as rice during their desperate attempts to rescue people. Additionally, there was another worker who was rescued from inside his truck while going over a bridge near Rongjiang football field, where about 3 meters were submerged on it.

Around 80,900 individuals have been reported evacuated by Tuesday afternoon in Guizhou, which includes 48,900 from Rongjiang County and 32,000 people from Congjiang County. From these places, basic necessities along with provided tents for displaced individuals were established as temporary shelters. New kindergarten schools are now located along creeks.
