Nitish Kumar Likely to Enter Rajya Sabha, Say JDU Sources Amid Fresh Speculation

In Bihar, one name stands out above all others when it comes to politics – Nitish Kumar. And now new rumours are circulating regarding what he will do next. According to some of those inside Janata Dal United, the seasoned politician has expressed strong interest in taking a seat in Rajya Sabha soon and still being chief minister with backing from the BJP at the same time.

This development has generated a lot of discussion amongst those in both Patna and Delhi.

A Shift in Plans

Party insiders have suggested Nitish Kumar may participate in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election, which contradicts previous reports regarding Kumar’s approval of his son as a possible candidate for the Upper House.

As speculation spread, senior members of the party reacted quickly, with Bihar minister Vijay Chaudhary visiting JDU national working president Sanjay Jha’s residence in Patna, accompanied by close aide and MLC Sanjay Gandhi. Union Minister and JDU leader Ram Nath Thakur also visited Jha’s home, demonstrating the seriousness of the discussions occurring there.

Though there has been no formal announcement from the party.

Allies Push Back

Some people have rejected the speculation about Nitish Kumar resigning as CM because Union Minister Giriraj Singh has dismissed such a thing, saying these are just political rumours which come up every festive season. There have been some moderate responses too, such as Sanjay Gandhi saying this was up to the CM and the meeting was to strengthen party infrastructure ahead of the elections.

The party is being careful in their comments; they’ve given no confirmation or denial.

Rajya Sabha Polls Around the Corner

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially scheduled biennial elections for 37 Rajya Sabha parliamentarians from ten states, all whose current seat occupants’ terms are due to expire in April 2026. The ten states that will be impacted are Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana.

The official announcement was made on February 26th. The deadline to submit nomination papers is March 5th. Scrutiny of the candidates’ nomination papers will be conducted on March 6th; then candidates may withdraw their nomination papers up until March 9th. Polling will take place on March 16th at 5 PM, and the results will be announced on the same day at 5 PM as well.

A Calculated Move

If Nitish Kumar chooses to enter the Rajya Sabha, the move would carry weight far beyond Bihar. It would mark a significant moment in the career of one of India’s longest-serving regional leaders.

For now, the decision remains his alone. In a state accustomed to political turns, observers wait for clarity. The coming days may offer answers.
