New Technologies and Environmentally Friendly Practices

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is prized as one of India’s most modern, fully equipped, and environmentally friendly airports. Fadnavis has set goals for the airport and its advanced baggage handling system. It will have 360-degree barcode scanning for efficient and secure luggage management and serve as a green airport that makes use of 37 MW of renewable energy. All onsite vehicles will be electric or run on alternative fuels, and there are plans for large-scale use of sustainable aviation fuel.

Parallel and Integrated Development

Plans to connect the airport to Mumbai and other regions using Atal Setu, Coastal Road, suburban rail, and water transport all prioritize connectivity, which seems to be a key focus. An elevated road from Thane is also in the pipeline. The airport will introduce innovations such as city-based baggage check-in, ensuring seamless travel for passengers. A metro-like train will connect the terminals, and walking distances to travelators will be greatly reduced, improving the overall passenger experience.

Adani Group’s Interest and Investment in Projects

Navi Mumbai International Airport is being constructed by NMIAL, which is a joint venture of Adani Airport Holdings Limited and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra, with the former owning 74% and the latter 26%. The newly planned airport’s investment is expected to be around ₹16,700 crores, aimed at relieving congestion from Mumbai’s existing airport and servicing the growing air traffic demand. Once operational, NMIA is expected to surpass the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in scale and trunk with an ability to handle nine crore passengers annually.

Looking Above: Final Development and Expected Dates of Inauguration

In partnership with the Adani Group, the Maharashtra government is working on having all regulatory and operational clearances for the smooth commencement of operations, with the last phase underway. This project strongly exemplifies the success of public-private partnerships in Indian infrastructure development. This will serve as a design innovation in airports and sustainability while enhancing convenience for passengers.
