Japanese Tourist Harassed Near Amer Fort: CCTV Footage Captures Attack

On Sunday morning, a Japanese tourist visiting Amber Fort in Jaipur, Rajasthan, experienced a terrifying ordeal when five men accosted her. This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of tourists as well as the safety of women in public spaces.

Harrowing Incident at a Historic Site

Arriving in Rajasthan from Japan just three days ago, a tourist had intended to visit the famous Amer fort. While walking to another temple (this time the nearby Ganesh temple), she was approached by five men who reportedly grabbed her by the arm and behaved inappropriately. As per Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Surendra Singh, the attackers struck while the tourist was near the fort during a quiet period and attempted to intimidate her after grabbing her by the arm and saying very inappropriate things to her. The woman was terrified and called for help and then was able to break free and run into the fort, where she was able to contact the security guards there.

CCTV Captures the Accused

The tourist was able to leave the situation with their safety intact, however; the five suspects left before law enforcement was able to arrive. Luckily for law enforcement, there are CCTV recordings in the area that document the crime. The CCTV footage showed the individuals walking down the hillside post-attack. Law enforcement is currently reviewing the recordings in order to identify the suspects and apprehend them.

Gautam Dotasra is the station house officer (SHO) for Amer Police Station. Gautam is regulating the formation of the first available police team, in conjunction with the control room of Amer Fort, to locate and track down the suspects in this incident. Every effort is being made to trace the suspects.

Police Response and Investigation

The complaints, filed by the tourist and registered with law enforcement, would lead to the commencement of an investigation into this incident. Officials continue to give this investigation a high priority because a foreign citizen was involved, and this crime occurred in a high-profile tourist area.

The ACP, Mr Singh, stated that the police would be doubling the amount of police officers assigned to the area surrounding the fort in order to develop a sense of safety for visitors to the area, particularly women, as a result of this incident. Local authorities, in conjunction with the local tourism authority, have been working to improve surveillance and emergency response capabilities in the area surrounding the fort.

Tourism Safety Concerns

The attack has sparked renewed discussions about safety measures for tourists in Rajasthan. While the state remains a popular destination for domestic and international visitors, incidents like this underline the risks posed by isolated areas near historic sites.

Tourism experts stress the need for enhanced patrols, real-time monitoring of public spaces, and awareness campaigns for visitors about potential risks. “Tourist safety is paramount. Incidents of harassment not only endanger individuals but also affect the reputation of heritage destinations,” said a tourism official.

Community Vigilance and Prevention

Local authorities are urging residents and business owners around Amer Fort to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately. Community participation, combined with technology such as CCTV surveillance, is seen as critical in deterring such crimes.

Security experts recommend additional measures, including emergency help points, better lighting in secluded areas, and quick-response protocols for tourist spots. Authorities also hope that timely arrests of the suspects will serve as a deterrent for future incidents.

A Broader Issue of Women’s Safety

The Jaipur incident reflects the persistent challenge of ensuring women’s safety in public spaces. Despite legal protections and campaigns aimed at preventing harassment, women—particularly foreign tourists—remain vulnerable to such crimes.

Child and women’s rights activists have called for stricter policing, swift justice, and preventive measures to make tourist areas safe for all visitors. “Safety is not just about law enforcement; it’s about creating an environment where women can move freely without fear,” said a local NGO worker.
