India Denies Claims US Using Its Ports for Strikes on Iran, Calls Reports Baseless

New Delhi has categorically disproved the latest claims that the US military is using India’s ports to carry out operations against Iran. An interview with former US Army colonel Douglas Macgregor aired on the One America News network triggered these accusations when Macgregor claimed that the US has purposefully relied on Indian naval bases after the destruction of their own military installations.

The MEA responded immediately via @MEAIndiaFactCheck to disclaim the allegations as “false and fake”. The MEA’s statement warns the public about false and fabricated claims made on various social media platforms regarding US military operations against Iran. Additionally, India reiterates that it will not aid or support any US attacks against Iran and has taken a neutral position with respect to this asymmetrical conflict.

Background: A Volatile Middle East

Tensions are escalating in the Middle East, with the US and Israel executing joint attacks on Iran, killing its supreme leader, and Iran responding with missile attacks against Israel and US bases in the Gulf; an additional escalation occurred when US submarines sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, killing 87 people.

The government of India has been following this crisis with significant concern and has called on all sides of the conflict to exercise restraint, avoid escalating violence, and ensure civilian safety. There is concern currently for the safety and well-being of the large number of Indian nationals living in the Gulf.

Maintaining Neutrality Amid Speculation

India has reacted by attempting to maintain a diplomatic balance. Although the Ministry of External Affairs disclaims Indian participation in military operations, the government has reiterated the importance of stability in the region. The purpose of this stance is to keep India out of the larger U.S.-Iran confrontation while also keeping Indians living overseas safe and secure.

To address the problem of misinformation promptly, India has been able to maintain their credibility in the eyes of the world. The analysis indicates that due to the viral nature of claims and the speed at which this type of information travels through social media, it is critical that diplomats clarify misunderstandings quickly in order to promote a positive diplomatic relationship between countries.

Vigilance and Diplomacy

As tension persists in the Middle East, India is alert. The government has reiterated that speculation should not overshadow reality and has stated that it will uphold its commitment to principled diplomatic practice and regional stability by providing an unequivocal denial of the allegations made against it as an act of its commitment to the broader international community and its efforts to work collaboratively and productively with Israel.
