Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia Cleared Of Charges In Liquor Policy Case

A significant legal ruling has occurred when the Delhi High Court ruled to clear Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia from all corruption charges related to the controversial liquor policy case: A significant turning point in a case that has captured the attention of India’s media and reshaped the political landscape of Delhi.

Furthermore, the court found that there was no overall conspiracy or criminal intention in relation to the now-repealed excise policy, thus giving relief to the former Delhi Chief Minister, as well as his Deputy, after years of being pursued through the judicial process.

Court Questions the Investigation

Not only did the court acquit the accused, but it also had a critique of the investigation conducted by the CBI. The court noted that the prosecution relied too much on conjecture rather than tangible evidence.

The court made it clear that no prima facie case existed against any of the 23 defendants. The judge condemned the prosecution’s use of approvers and forgiven suspects to support an allegation of conspiracy, stating that relying on such theories may violate the sanctity of the Constitution.

The court also suggested that a departmental investigation should be conducted into how a public servant became the principal defendant.

The Policy at the Centre of the Storm

This story dates back to when the Aam Aadmi Party launched its Delhi Excise Policy in 2021-2022 to change the capital’s liquor business to make it easier to access and to generate some money. In a short time, however, the policy began to receive unfavourable press due to allegations of giving preferential treatment to private parties and accusations of financial malfeasance.

The Delhi government had to withdraw the policy ultimately, but not before it created a significant amount of political damage and had begun to pursue legal action against those accused of taking advantage of the policy.

Emotional Reactions Outside Court

After the judgement, Kejriwal gave an emotional address to the press, claiming the truth had ultimately come through after enduring protracted allegations and protracted litigation against him. Furthermore, as a former chief minister of the Indian state of Delhi, whose political identity was built on an anti-corruption campaign, Kejriwal emphasised how personal this was for him. This case had also negatively impacted the political fortunes of his party, especially in the wake of the recent elections.

CBI Signals Next Legal Move

A statement from the agency indicates that they plan to contest the decision in the High Court. According to officials, the agency failed to properly consider some of the more important components of their investigation, meaning the legal issue may not wrap up just yet.

Beyond the Verdict

Although this was a pivotal verdict in its own right, it will have far-reaching consequences as time goes on. This case has already altered how many people think about good governance, how we investigate things, and how those in authority are held accountable.

At this point in time, the decision of the court clearly states that merely because there are allegations of something does not mean they can be used instead of actual evidence. As one of the most highly publicised cases in the history of India, this result reinforces a fundamental tenet of justice.
