Flights From Noida’s Mega Airport Set to Begin in 60 Days — Minister Drops Big Update

The long-awaited day when millions of people in the National Capital Region will travel from the ambitious Noida International Airport for commercial flights may finally arrive soon. India‘s civil aviation minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu has stated that he expects commercial flights from Noida International Airport to commence flying within approximately 45-60 days. The announcement has been welcomed by countless individuals and businesses eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new airport in the Greater Noida and National Capital Region surrounding areas, having been waiting for years for this huge aviation project to finally be operational and able to accept passengers.

The airport infrastructure is largely ready; however, the major obstacle preventing the launching of the Noida International Airport – the lack of one necessary security approval (which is still needed) – is still needed to open the airport to commercial flights.

A New Aviation Hub for Delhi-NCR

The One Final Approval Holding Flights Back

Airport Security Programmes (ASP) must be issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) before commercial flights can take off, regardless of all the excitement surrounding the potential of air travel. The Airport Security Programme provides the airport with its “master security blueprint” and includes items such as the following:

– Passenger screening procedures;

– Access control systems;

– Perimeter surveillance;

– Emergency Response Planning; and

– Security Coordination between Agencies.

Without the BCAS’s approval of an ASP, the BCAS will not be able to issue Airport Entry Passes (AEPs), which are the credentials required for airline personnel, ground crew members, cargo handlers, etc., to have access to the airport.

According to officials, after BCAS issues an ASP, operational preparations could happen very quickly thereafter.

Domestic and Cargo Flights First

Operation of the airport will commence with one operating runway, with an emphasis on commercial and cargo flights only. International flights will commence as capacity increases and infrastructure can support them.

The phased launch strategy will provide airports with the ability to conduct testing of systems and create a seamless transition when adding additional international flights and operational capabilities.

The phased launch strategy is also reflective of how most large-scale airports throughout the world initiate service, starting with limited flight options and progressively increasing service.

A Project Years in the Making

The Noida International Airport project has been one of India’s most closely watched infrastructure developments.

Strategically located near Jewar, the airport is expected to transform connectivity for cities across western Uttar Pradesh, including the following:

  • Noida
  • Greater Noida
  • Ghaziabad
  • Agra
  • Aligarh

Once fully developed in multiple phases, the airport could handle tens of millions of passengers annually, placing it among the largest airports in Asia.

Industry experts believe the project will not only ease pressure on Delhi’s main airport but also stimulate tourism, logistics, and international trade across northern India.
