Varun Chakravarthy Opens Up About Harrowing Experience

Indian cricketer Varun Chakravarthy spoke recently about the mental and emotional toll he endured when he faced an avalanche of negativity and abuse in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL). The so-called “mystery spinner” of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was COVID-19 positive ahead of a game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), which led to a number of games until the tournament was halted after 29 of the planned matches had been played.

Through his participation in the YouTube show Journey to Jersey, Chakravarthy reflected on how he was held responsible for the sudden suspension of the IPL, stating, “This was the worst phase of my life to date.”

Online Abuse and Death Threats

Chakravarthy stated that when he tested positive, lots of abuse online was aimed at him personally. “There were people that would abuse me. IPL was the only method for people to kill time at that time, so they were extremely upset because it was taken away. They said, ‘Why don’t you just die?’ It was severe,” Chakravarthy stated.

He said the emotional impact of this type of online harassment had an additional long-term effect on him. It highlighted how much pressure and scrutiny athletes are under globally during such events. He also indicated that he had left the biosecure bubble to have shoulder treatment, which was one of the factors that led to him being exposed to the virus.

Continuing Professional Success

Despite going through a trying time, Chakravarthy has been a crucial member of KKR with his mental toughness and willpower. Last season, he was the seventh-ranked wicket-taker with 17 wickets at an average of 22.52 and a strike rate of 7.66, while his best performance was 3-22.

Throughout his time playing 83 games for the franchise, Chakravarthy has had 99 wickets, with an average of 23.74, including two four-wicket hauls and a career-best of 5-20.

Impact at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

Venakatesh played an important role outside of IPL cricket, contributing to his country’s success in the T20 World Cup, where he was the second highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets (along with Jasprit Bumrah). Although he had a higher than average economy rate (9.25) in the games he played, his remarkable ability to maintain composure while performing under pressure proved that he was on track to being successful at the highest levels of competitive cricket.

Lessons on Athlete Mental Health

Chakravarthy’s insights show how athletes struggle with mental health, particularly during times when they are in the public eye and experiencing crises. It is his first-hand experience of these types of events that highlights the importance of empathy, responsible sportsmanship/fan behaviour and psychological support for athletes as they go through challenging situations – such as a global pandemic or disruption to their tournaments.

Looking Ahead

Even with the threat of online harassment while playing for IPL 2021, Varun Chakravarthy remains a key player for KKR and within the Indian cricket community. The perseverance he has exhibited, as well as his performance, highlights how astute and strong-willed athletes must be in order to succeed professionally while also taking care of their mental health because of the significant amount of pressure from the public.

Additionally, Chakravarthy’s experience helps create a larger discussion about the accountability of fans, the media’s responsibilities, and the welfare of athletes by reminding all of us that our sporting heroes are human and that they can be impacted by societal pressures which may negatively affect their mental health.
