Red Alert in Delhi: Temple Near Red Fort on Terror Radar After Revenge Plot Claims

After the police received intelligence information that terrorists may be planning to attack religious sites on or near the site of the historic Red Fort in Delhi – with a temple located in Chandni Chowk as a potential target – authorities have increased security measures throughout the city. Law enforcement officials think the suspected terrorist group may be related to a Pakistan-based organisation called Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Intelligence Inputs Trigger Security Surge

High-ranking government and law enforcement sources state that security alerts were sent out prior to the Republic Day celebrations (January 26, 2026), leading to an increase in security procedures across the national capital. Subsequently, a second wave of alerts occurred following the February 6, 2026 suicide bombing at a mosque in Islamabad, which many believe would lead to a retaliatory narrative of sorts by which sources believe may have triggered a possible revenge narrative.

According to one source, intelligence inputs suggested terrorists may use IEDs to target places of worship (i.e., mosques, temples) that are expected to attract a large number of people, with possible example sites being referred to in close proximity to the Red Fort.

Chandni Chowk Temple Under Watch

A temple located in the Chandni Chowk area was identified by security forces as a potential target; thus, there was an increase in surveillance on numerous religious sites – including the famous Gauri Shankar Temple – with more police presence prior to the Mahashivratri festival than normal.

Police units, bomb disposal squads, and specially trained officers were assigned to locations around Old Delhi to help ensure safety at the busiest times when crowds of people were out.

Massive Security Deployment Across Delhi

In response to intelligence inputs about a potential threat, the Delhi Police has increased surveillance in heavily populated areas such as markets and places of worship. Their operations will consist of increased use of CCTV; enhanced vehicle inspection at key points of major entry points across the city; deploying bomb squads and/or explosives detection K-9 units; and having quick reaction teams on standby.

Senior Delhi Police officials have indicated that they are working closely with central intelligence services to jointly determine the credibility of any threats.

Earlier Alerts Add to Concerns

In the past weeks, intelligence agencies warned that there may be terrorist attempts associated with Khalistani terrorists and foreign-based handlers on Republic Day. Authorities had flagged possible links between organised crime networks and extremist handlers.

Threat Still Under Verification

Although previous warnings have turned out not to be true, officials say Delhi remains a high-value target in intelligence inputs due to its political, cultural and economic significance. Security agencies are still reviewing new information as they maintain a high level of alertness.

Officials want the public to be alert but not to panic as they continue to conduct investigations and surveillance throughout the national capital.
