Amit Shah’s Record-Breaking Tenure as Minister

Shah has set the longest-serving record for a minister in the union government and the home ministry, a record previously set by the celebrated BJP leader L.K. Advani. As of 5th August 2025, Shah has completed 2,258 days, far exceeding the 6-year mark since his appointment on 30th May 2019. Shah has already completed more than 6 years in service, and this noteworthy achievement of his home ministership coincides with the anniversary of Article 370’s abrogation in 2019—a key and historic decision of his term.

NDA Meeting: PM Modi’s Tribute

As highlighted in the meeting of the National Democratic Alliance, PM Modi has Shah enduring and able to attract praise over his firm stewardship, tactical governance over the country, and his commitment to internal security and national integration. He highlighted issues with coalition partners arising from Shah’s usurpation of the National Democratic Alliance and the political and policy storms created by his counterparts. Modi has also credited Shah with the political achievements of the alliance at the state and national elections over the past years.

Revocation of Article 370

The home minister’s order of getting rid of Article 370 was one of Amit Shah’s greatest accomplishments. With the removal of the article, the erstwhile state was split into two union territories, J&K and Ladakh. This was seen as an attempt to progress towards “one nation, one constitution.” Not only did this result in an unprecedented increase in tourism in Kashmir, but there was also a significant decline in terrorist activities.

Clamp Down On Insurgency And Extremism

Shah was also responsible for a number of beneficial changes to the internal security of the nation. There has been a dramatic decrease in the activities of the left-wing extremists and Maoists, alongside a drop in violent activities and fatalities among security forces. The Home Ministry’s policing and modernization policies have been beneficial in several insurgency-affected areas, most notably in the Northeast.

Criminal Justice Reform & Citizenship Amendment Act

Some critical steps were taken administratively at the mark of Shah’s period in the office. The Citizenship Amendment Act was endorsed and passed, which, while controversial, was seen as an act of mercy towards the persecuted minorities of the adjacent nations. Moreover, Shah undertook the holistic revision of the criminal justice system of colonial times to improve the infrastructure of the justice system and the legal framework.

Under his leadership, recent successes in the counter-terror campaigns have been showcased through initiatives like Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, which took sharp steps toward terrorist incursion. Shah received special praise from Prime Minister Modi for the portions of the speech that were intended to show how the government and security agencies were working toward preventing security breaches and terror activities.

A Journey of Political Strategy and Coalition Building

Amit Shah had already built his image both as a political strategist and a grassroots organizer long before he took on the position of the Union Home Minister. He was the serving president of the BJP from 2014 to 2020, a period in which he oversaw unprecedented electoral wins and was instrumental in the considerable growth of the party. Shah was and continues to be a close associate of PM Modi, and his sway was not just confined to security issues, as he helped shape the policy and political landscape at both the state and national levels.

The Achievements and New Issues Still to Be Addressed

Shah’s achievements as Home Minister include bold legislation, enhanced internal security, and relentless commitment to national integration. Closing the integration achievement gap on his legacy report card requires ongoing challenge resolution, such as the continual management of the volatile regions like Manipur. Still, Shah’s legacy, framed by his enduring impact on Indian governance, earns him accolades beyond his party, and as is the case with many contemporary politicians, he strays from his party’s utterly polarized judgment.

The appointment of Amit Shah as Home Minister marks the beginning of a new era for India. His relentless focus on internal Indian security, as well as Shah’s unifying and at times forceful embrace of federal unity promises, is bound to leave an imprint on Indian governance for many years to come.
