Tremors in the Capital: 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Haryana, Rattles Delhi-NCR

There was a slight earthquake that hit North India on Thursday morning, a reminder to residents of the looming seismic threats in the region. The quake measured 4.4 on the Richter scale and was felt throughout Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and other nearby areas following the quake hitting Jhajjar district in Haryana at 9:04 AM.

The earthquake happened at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The epicenter lay at latitude 28.63°N and longitude 76.68°E squarely in the Jhajjar area. The NCS confirmed the occurrence in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), which read:

“EQ of M: 4.4, On: 10/07/2025 09:04:50 IST, Lat: 28.63 N, Long: 76.68 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Jhajjar, Haryana.”

Only minutes into the quake, the citizens of the Delhi-NCR region took to social media to share their experiences. A few individuals reported jolts lasting a few seconds that resulted in people venturing out of buildings, offices, and schools as a precautionary measure. Videos appeared of people lining up outside offices and families crowded in open spaces. Thankfully, as yet there has been no reported injury or damage to buildings.

This quake is a reminder of the fact that Delhi falls within Seismic Zone IV, as defined by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, an earthquake-prone high-risk zone for moderate- to high-intensity earthquakes. The comparatively close depth of this earthquake contributed to its recognizability, rendering it widely felt despite the moderate intensity.

Curiously enough, this is not the first seismic event to shake the region during 2025. On February 17, Delhi-NCR was hit by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake at 5:36 AM, its depth only 5 km. While both were innocuous, they have acted as pleasant but firm reminders to revisit safety preparedness and attentiveness in such vitally exposed locations.

The government asked citizens to stay calm and adopt normal earthquake safety procedures, such as taking cover behind heavy furniture when the ground shakes, avoiding elevators, and proceeding to open spaces once outside. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority has also stressed the provision of simple emergency kits and periodic safety audits of buildings, particularly in crowded cities like Delhi and Gurugram.

With a region so vulnerable to rapid urbanization and natural exposure, incidents like these are a warning to be prepared. While the earthquake on Thursday was more frightening than destructive, it has spawned another flurry of debates over seismic safety, urban planning, and public education.

As the earthquakes travel by, the message is clear: nature does not warn twice. Stay safe, stay informed.
