PM Modi Honored for Distinguished Global Leadership
During a historic state visit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded one of Ghana’s highest national awards, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, which he received from President John Mahama. The honor was bestowed upon him “for distinguished statesmanship and an influential leader on the global stage.” While accepting the award, Modi dedicated it to the youth of India, its culture, and India-Ghana relations while also highlighting the values and traditions, alongside shared democracy, that unite both countries.
Deepening India-Ghana Bilateral Relations
This award comes as a mark of the enhancement of relations between the two countries. During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and President Mahama agreed on elevating the bilateral relationship to a comprehensive partnership with increased cooperation in agriculture, education, health care, digital payments, and even defense. Modi also announced the setting up of a Skill Development Centre in Ghana, the doubling of ITEC and ICCR scholarships, and support towards the ‘Feed Ghana’ program, which showcases India’s dedication to the growth and development of the African nation.

The Order of the Star of Ghana is one of the country’s most distinguished civilian awards, presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Ghana and humanity. Recipients include global icons like Queen Elizabeth II in 2007, Nelson Mandela in 1998, Kofi Annan in 2000, Alassane Ouattara in 2017, King Charles III in 2018, King Mohammed VI in 2017, and Giorgio Napolitano in 2006. Modi’s name in this notable list reflects the acknowledgement of his leadership and India’s influence in the global arena.

As highlighted by Modi, the honor “places new responsibility” to foster sharper bilateral engagements while serving as “a trusted friend and development partner” to Ghana.
