By January 2025, BharatNet had linked more than 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats, stringing close to 6.92 lakh kilometers of optical fiber through mountains and fields. As a result, mobile and broadband reach shot up: internet subscriptions climbed from 25 crore in 2014 to almost 97 crore by June 2024—a jaw-dropping 285 percent leap. Meanwhile, the cost of data plummeted, falling from 308 rupees per gigabyte in 2014 to just 9.34 rupees in 2022, turning once-daunting bills into everyday expenses.
Empowering Citizens: Digital Services and Inclusion
At its heart, Digital India aims to empower every citizen with simple, reliable technology. Today government services—from healthcare and education to banking and welfare—are just a click away, making bureaucracy clearer and easier to navigate. UPI alone transformed finance; by April 2025, users had completed over 1,867 crore transactions in a single month. Digital literacy drives, such as Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan, have taught millions in rural areas how to stay safe online and access these benefits, so no one is left behind.
Boosting Innovation: India’s Rise as a Digital Powerhouse
A sturdy digital backbone in India has spark-plugged a nationwide wave of fresh ideas and startup energy. Thanks to the fast spread of 4G and 5G networks—projected to reach 99.6 percent of all districts by 2025—the country now sits near the top of the global tech ladder. Digital services added 11.74 percent to GDP in 2022-23 and could push that share close to 20 percent by 2030, outrunning older industries. Hefty new programs in AI, quantum tech, and chip-making aim to keep India on the leading edge of worldwide innovation.
