Punjab, Kerala & Bengal Bypolls: AAP, Congress and TMC Score Victories in Key Seats

The political map of India has changed with the latest results of the assembly by-elections in Punjab, Kerala, West Bengal, and Gujarat. Congress registered a victory at Nilambur, while TMC captured the Kaliganj seat in West Bengal. Also, AAP celebrated an important win at Ludhiana West. In this piece I will analyze these changes along with new trends and their potential impacts on Indian politics.

Punjab’s Active Voter Base Supports AAP

With over 10 thousand votes to spare, Sanjeev Arora from AAP outperformed Congress’s Bharat Bhushan Ashu during the Lodhiwen West constituency election. For AAP, this win is vital as it strengthens the party’s governance reputation across Punjab. While celebrating this momentous win for his party, Aman Arora stated that delivering on promises served to strengthen cadre support at grassroots levels. The relatively low turnout of 51.33% further highlights the need to mobilize core supporters within urban areas.

Victory for UDF in Kerala: Congress Retains Nilambur

In the recently held by-elections for Nilambur, Shoukath Aryadan of Congress led UDF to a resounding victory, defeating CPI(M)’s M. Swaraj by more than 11,000 votes. In this election, Shoukath garnered over 77,000 votes, which is quite remarkable considering the Congressional enthusiasm in the state during this period that the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has been under fire. It is worth noting that Nilambur led all other constituencies with a voter turnout of 75.27%, showing vigorous participation and ample responsiveness to congressional campaigns in that part of the state.

Bengal Caliganj By-Election Result: TMC’s Landslide in Kaliganj: Consolidating Power in Bengal

Alifa Ahmed for Trinamool Congress scored a landslide victory at the Kaliganj bypoll, winning with a margin of 49,755 votes and capturing approximately 55% of the vote. Her win reinforces TMC’s control over West Bengal as its successor after her father’s death and his term as MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed. There were slight increases in vote share from BJP and alliance Congress-CPIM, so I wouldn’t declare them dead yet, but they aren’t contesting fully in this sarcastode in which turnout reached remarkable figures at 73.36%.

Other Key Insights: AAP’s Delighted Wins and BJP’s Consolidation in Gujarat

Besides Ludhiana West, AAP contested from the Visavadar seat in Gujarat, where Gopal Italia emerged victoriously against Kirit Patel of BJP by more than 17,000 votes. On the other hand, BJP managed to hold on to the Kadi seat in Gujarat. These developments highlight AAP’s expanding presence beyond Punjab and Delhi while also showcasing the political competition within the state of Gujarat.

Electoral Participation along with Bypoll Trends

The by-elections had to be conducted on June 19 due to the death or resignation of sitting MLAs. Voter participation was calm; however, tight security was implemented around all counting centers. Participation was quite different throughout the regions: Nilambur took the lead at 75.27%, followed by Kaliganj at 73.36%, then came Visavadar, scoring 56.89%, followed closely by Kadi at 57.91%. Ludhiana West finished with a little over half at 51.33%. These outcomes demonstrate the necessity for focused campaigns, especially using hyper-localized techniques that deal with specific regional concerns directly influencing voters.

What These Results Mean for National Politics

The results of the 2025 by-elections are both a sign of continuity and change. AAP’s victories in Punjab and Gujarat indicate that the party is now emerging on the national stage, while Congress’s performance in Kerala and TMC’s stronghold in Bengal further consolidate their regional significance. For BJP, retaining Kadi but losing Visavadar marks an area needing internal reflection ahead of future elections. While analyzing the results, these bypolls provide substantial clarity regarding voter motivation and sentiments along with myriad political factors ahead of the next general elections and transitioning India’s political structure.
